Safety Issues
Findings published from the government of Canada found that two leadings cause of motor vehicle accidents (MVA), were undesirable weather conditions and human-errors (Statistics Canada, 2004). While weather still remains an uncontrollable factor, human errors on the other hand may be successfully eliminated with the introduction of Google’s autonomous vehicles. While this project is still in the early stages, Goggle has already began testing about a dozen of its autonomous vehicles, stacking up about 700,000 miles in total with each tester vehicle going at a maximum speed of 25miles/hour . In the first stage of the testing phase, there have been a total of two accidents, one of which was hit while the care was sitting at a stoplight, and the other crashed while the vehicle was on Manuel mode. Apart from Google’s own testing program, which is set to enlarge the dozens of google vehicles to allow 200 vehicles on the road within the next couple of years, google are also ready to submit its vehicles for the official testing administered by State level DMV. Lastly it is important to note that, under current laws, all testers of these vehicles must be in possession of a valid driver’s license and be able to witch to manual driving mode at any given time.
